What is vehicle exhaust emission and why do we need to perform
diagnostics on it? What is a petrol gas analyser and why we need to use one? Those
are questions often asked and even more often left unanswered. Simply put,
the vehicle exhaust emissions are the gases that are produced during internal
combustion in the engines and exhausted through the tale pipe. Some of those
are harmless, others are really vicious gases that we don't want around.
Besides the need of running "clean" cars, vehicle emissions can tell a
diagnostic technician a lot about what is happening in the combustion
chamber and what actions to take to make the engine run as it was designed
to do. An petrol exhaust gas analyser is a mandatory item for MOT/DOT testing stations around the world and should be regarded as essential equipment for any modern self-respecting vehicle repair workshop. With carbon tax and footprint getting ever more expensive, one needs to ensure his vehicle compliance before each MOT test and help save the planet and its own pockets in the process. A quick health check of the
engine management system can be done by carrying out an analysis of the
exhaust gasses using an petrol exhaust gas analyser. Measuring the petrol exhaust gas components is a very quick, simple and non intrusive test. To use petrol exhaust gas analysis effectively however, it is first necessary to understand the composition and typical quantities of the gasses. The five main and most useful for diagnostics exhaust gasses are:
Petrol Exhaust Emission Analysers are coming in different flavors but the
two main groups are portable and stationary units. PC based units usually
have more useful features than the Stand alone ones. The Petrol Exhaust Emission Analyser is essentially a scientific instrument and good care should be taken when operating one. Regular service and when necessary, calibration of the unit, is essential for keeping it accurate. Warning: An Petrol Exhaust Emissions Gas Analyser is NOT suitable for measuring Diesel Exhaust Emissions! Attempts to do so will result in seriously damaging the petrol gas analyser! |
